250
years old this year.
In 1751 the little chapel was built for the Baptist Members. Over the years it has continued to provide a place of worship until November 2000, when floods caused a great deal of damage to the floor and other parts of the church.
.
Of course there have been floods in times past and the church minute books faithfully record these, but unfortunately this time the damage is much more serious. The members are very few and sadly in December 2000, the Pastor, Tom Robb-Ronald closed the church temporarily until repairs have taken place. The cost of the repairs will be in the region of £30,000, and the church funds are nowhere near this amount. Support is needed to maintain the church in Diseworth. Throughout the 250 years many surnames have continued, showing how these families supported the church, even when they moved away from the village.
The name Adkin appears from the start, and the many branches of the family feature throughout the accounts. Also Babington, Barker, Bryan, Handford, Hayes, Howe, Hutchinson, Jarrom, Lacey, Mee, Moreton, Roper, Sheffield, Wilders and Yates. The earliest marked graves found in the churchyard mention the names of Tarratt and Jacques, the first a child in 1772, and the second, John Jacques in 1787. A small book will shortly be published recording the history of the Baptist Church and its members.
